ICFF/BOI Make Impression at Conference

Indianapolis had the honor of being picked to attend the Municipal Financial Empowerment Strategy Session Feb. 28-29 in San Francisco, hosted by The National League of Cities (NLC) and the Cities for Financial Empowerment Coalition (CFE).

The conference brought together representatives from more than 15 cities from across the nation to exchange ideas and gain practical advice about financial empowerment for citizens.

The focus was on identifying available resources, figuring out what works and what doesn’t for a particular community, and disseminating proven data toward promising strategies and best practices.

The programs from New York City and San Francisco served as models during the session, but the work being done in Indianapolis did not escape notice.

Indy’s Campaign for Financial Fitness/Bank On Indy were distinguished among the attendees for being the only major city to rely entirely on volunteers for outreach efforts, rather than paid municipal employees.

ICFF and Bank on Indy were also recognized for bringing their program to the people in neighborhoods, apartment complexes, local events and even jails.

Free Tax Prep kicks into high gear

The federal tax filing deadline on April 17 is fast approaching, and Indy’s Free Tax Prep volunteers are helping people file their income tax returns free of charge! That includes Mobile Tax Sites that bring the program out into the community.

At the Mobile Tax Sites alone, 516 tax returns were prepared in January and February of 2012, and another 414 returns were filed in March. That’s 930 tax returns from the mobile sites so far! A total of 5,000 individuals and families are expected to make use of the free service this year.

Free Tax Prep is a program launched to help Indianapolis residents file timely, accurate tax returns without having to pay costly preparation fees. Citizens can then use their refunds to pay down debts, buy groceries or other necessities or start a new bank account

Bank On Indy events coming this spring and summer

Bank On Indy will continue bringing their outreach program to residents this spring and summer, with a special focus on events at apartment communities and churches.

Banks and financial institutions looking to open new accounts should sign up to represent themselves at these events.

It’s a great opportunity for unbanked citizens to increase their financial security with their own bank account!

Thanks to Free Tax Prep Volunteers

The 2012 tax season is drawing to a close, and it’s been another great year for Indy’s Free Tax Prep program. We want to take this opportunity to thank all the terrific volunteers who are helping out the community with their time and expertise. We couldn’t do it without you!
